COVID-19: HIRA – Strategy For Leaders (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment)

The course covers strategic level information to demonstrate the ability to conduct a risk assessment in the workplace. The course will enable the delegates – who typically operates at management, leadership, workplace owner, health and safety compliance officer and safety representative levels – to prepare and conduct a risk assessment as well as, initiate remedial actions for hazards identified and risks assessed. Risk assessment is essential to any organisation or business, it is a legal requirement stipulated by the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the Mine Health and Safety Act. HIRA promotes a pro-active approach towards effective Health and Safety Management, serving as a valuable tool to the organisation in order to elevate the standard(s) of safety, meeting legal compliance and protecting persons from the hazards that they may potentially be exposed to Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis (HIRA) is a collective term that encompasses all activities involved in identifying hazards and evaluating risk at facilities, throughout their life cycle, to make certain that risks to employees, the public, or the environment are consistently controlled within the organization’s risk tolerance. These studies typically address three main risk questions to a level of detail commensurate with analysis objectives, life cycle stage, available information, and resources. A HIRA is a risk assessment tool that can be used to assess which hazards pose the greatest risk in terms of how likely they are to occur and how great their potential impact may be. It is not intended to be used as a prediction tool to determine which hazard will cause the next emergency.

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Information is key and therefore our COVID-19 regulatory compliance training, as directed by legislation, is structured to fill the gaps on COVID-19 awareness and preparation which is critically important to minimise and prevent the risk of a DEL inspector shutting down a workplace due to non-compliance with the COVID-19 directives. The information shared in COVID-19 training is not just important and applicable to workplaces but also to institutions such as churches, conference centres, education institutions, hospitality industry hotels and B&B’s, restaurants, beauty places and spas.

  • It is also critically important to be shared in the homes that we live in with our loved ones.
  • Everyone who has an interest in surviving, living and protecting themselves and their loved ones against the global pandemic should attend a COVID-19 Regulatory and Compliance Preparedness and Awareness Training session
  • Countries globally, including South Africa, have responded to the outbreak of COVID-19 by enforcing National Lockdowns to curb the spread,
  • The result of the lockdown and the levels of businesses’ operations during the lockdown period in South Africa, since 27 March 2020 to date, is that many businesses were forced to close doors and operations for a lengthy period of time.
  • Re-opening workplaces resulted in the need for regulatory compliance directives that was issued by the South African government to ensure safety and a preventative measure of curbing the spread which is an ongoing focus for all governments and citizens in all countries, globally.
  • The directive for South Africa can be found in the link to the WHO (World Health Organisation) and the OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) as these two organisations are the key drivers to the regulations that impacts and requires all workplaces and spaces where people gather to be ‘COVID-19’ READY before resuming workplace activities and / or before resuming activities where people gather eg churches, seminars, sports body places, conferences, events where more than 50 or 100 people gather for whatsoever reasons.
  • The virus is still spreading, which means that appropriate AWARENESS TRAINING IN THE WORKPLACE and in PLACES WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE GATHERING will play an integral role in helping to stop the spread of this Cornona-virus.
  • It is a requirement to ensure that all employees and employers and people meeting in non-work places are adequately informed and trained on the current SARS- CoV2 pandemic affecting all countries, businesses, citizens, etc worldwide.
  • COVID-19 training is thus:
  • a legal requirement in terms of the Hazardous Biological Agents Regulation (HBA).
  • significantly and critically important for all workplaces and spaces where people work and gather to initiate and register all staff for training and to receive their training certificates for when people return to work.
  • For businesses and for places where people gather to re-open:
  • The outbreak of COVID-19 has spread vast and wide and accordingly the main preventative measures are to practice stringent hygiene measures
  • It is vital to take all precautions to protect employees, customers, premises, visitors and general members of public.
  • The facilitator and the training material is accredited with inter alia : SAIOSH, OHSA, IOSH, NICD, IOSH, Intrasafe etc.

WHY SHOULD EVERYONE ATTEND COVID-19 TRAINING – BENEFITS FOR ALL

The only way we can beat this invisible enemy is bt providing the entire nation with the knowledge and awareness and ensuring there is an understanding that EVERYONE has an obligation to play a role and  part to protect our own lives and the lives of families, loved ones, friends, colleagues and everyone in our  communities by using the knowledge of how to minimise the risks of contracting COVID-19.
