Purpose Of This Course
A valid and current HIRA strategy plan and the implementation thereof must be presented to DEL Inspectors on request. The aim of the course is to enable delegates to demonstrate the ability to conduct a base-line (HIRA) risk assessment in a work place and in spaces where people gather eg churches to make responsible, accountable and informed decisions and contributions to the biohazzard risks as required by health and safety regulatory and legislated compliance requirements for the safety of employees and the general public at large.
It is recommended that HIRA training must be combined with a SHE Rep US13223 course as leaders, HR, SHE Reps and Covid-19 Compliance Officers must know how to do a proper Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. The SHE Rep course outcomes are significantly important to the HIRA strategy understanding as it impacts capability and competence to implement and roll-out HIRA and all related Covid-129 compliance linked duties in the workplace.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 places significant focus on hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) to reduce injuries in the workplace hence the importance of HIRA training. Section 8 refers to compliance to ensure a safe workplace by taking steps to eliminate and mitigate against risks. Section 10 instructs ensuring that products are without risk. Section 12 instructs employers to identify risks which may pose danger to employees. Section 18 mentions hazard identification and risk assessment as a function of the Health & Safety Representative. Throughout the Regulations reference is continuously made to identifying hazards and reducing risks. To be able to conduct a hazard identification and risk assessment accurately the leaders, health and safety committee reps and Covid-19 Compliance officers (also a role as directed requiring compliance to implement in workplaces) must receive the correct HIRA training procedures to conduct hazard identification and risk assessments and have the relevant authority and support to suggest and implement control measures.
Leadership and senior management teams of companies and organisations eg churches, event management spaces etc as strategic decisions around biohazzard and serious risk and disaster management decisions must be taken at the highest level, Health and Safety Committees, SHE REP, Covid 19 Compliance Officers, Human Resources, IT Risk Management, Disaster Recovery teams. Besides first responders in the workplace, the course is also highly recommended as part of a H&S career-choice and entrepreneurship model for unemployed youth, women, community volunteer-NGO workers and anyone interested in health, safety, and saving lives.
Training Methodology and Philosophy
A foundation of mentorship, raising awareness, respect and vigilance for health, safety, security and protection of spaces and places where people live, work, meet and gather.
Rhens is in partnership with Heart Guardians Emergency Training Centre headed by Helene Basson, a Clinical Facilitator who heads up our our Covid-19 course facilitation. Helene is supported by Sister Ingrid Watson (click here) who heads our Frontline Healthcare Professional Advisory Panel Of Experts. Both have worked in COVID-19-ICU wards during the peak of the global pandemic and are highly qualified to lead this area as expert frontline healthcare professionals.
It is highly recommended that employers ensure that all staff who work off – site are trained in first-responder eg. First Aid & Fire-Fighting Level 1 as a minimum, in case of an injury ‘on duty’ in the absence of ‘traditional, on-site first responders’ when medical emergencies arise out of office. This recommendation is supported by the ILO’s ‘An employers’ guide on working from home in response to the outbreak of COVID-19′ (for quick reference to health and safety for remote workers, refer to page 19,20 and 21 ).
